How I decided to become a Writer

Life itself started like a journey back at one remote village in the Western Nepal; life was simple, pure and unspoiled by the so called virtue and vice of modern civilization, and the greatest dream one could ever have as a village boy was to visit the nearby town and get amused by trivial things such as bicycle, ice cream and colorful dresses.

1. Feudal Caste System

Nepal is still crippled with feudal caste system, one’s choice of profession is mostly predetermined by his or her caste, and one could hardly get out of this deeply-rooted social anomaly throughout the entire life.

My position was no different, my surname has played more important role than my choice when I became a British Gurkha soldier at 17, landed in Hong Kong at the middle of night like a confused sheep in front of the headlight, and my life completely changed even before I could fully realize it.

2. The Army Life

trumpeters 921709

The army life was certainly a very tough, suddenly changing from a carefree adolescent to a regimented army life was not easy, and I had my fair share of bad to worse days in my early days as a soldier.

It was still a privilege to become a British Gurkha, it commanded not only respect and pride back in our village society but also the best option that we have had, and that sense of pride, honor and achievement alone was more than enough to get over with the difficulty that came with the job and gave us strength to carry on.

The financial impact it did bring to the impoverished family like ours back at the village was pretty immense, so was the respect amongst the peers, and it keeps the tradition going on and on for more than 200 years by now.

3. Experience

Job With Limited Experience

But all the glitters started to come off at least for my case after 5 years in the service, most of the things I had perceived and believed about it were not true, and my interests started to wane itself off the army.

It also happened to be my first lesson of the reality of this world, we were not only treated unfairly, paid pittance, and discriminated against in many aspects but also exploited to the core, and it saddened me the most when I realized that we were treated like a third rate citizen by our then master for which we have sacrificed our everything for so many years.

Nevertheless, it was our pathetic but real situation of serving one nation while still being the citizen of other nation that did hurt my pride and eventually changed my position. Being a British Gurkha was still a very proud and honorable moment for us, still is for many even today.

Yet, our situation also made us a mercenary and there are still some people who are not familiar with the history of British Gurkhas do call us with that name. And it was that label of stigmatized life that I couldn’t bring myself into carry on living with and I decided to leave the army after serving it for the next 13 years in total.

4. Hard Work

heavy 934552

After the army, I briefly went back to Nepal with my young family and returned back to Hong Kong again to start a new job. My job required me to be in China for 5 days of each week, China was just opening up to the new world, and every day was like a new day.

For the next twenty years, I worked extremely hard by raising my young family and establishing my business, and survived the cruel world by my own without much help, guidance and support from outside.

The world outside the army was even harsher, people were nasty, and the locals, including the governmental disciplined services, always looked down upon us as an outsider. I am a self-made-man, I have learned everything in life the hard way and I didn’t know life could be so cruel and rewarding all at the same time. My own life has been my best teacher.

5. Money Does not matter

As I have been working since 17, I never wanted to work for money after I turned fifty and always wanted to do something more meaningful and rewarding at the later half of my life. Most importantly, it has to come directly from my heart, nourishes my soul and makes me feel happy and worthwhile.

Writing has always been in me, I used to write when I was young but completely stopped it as I got busy with life, and rekindling my writing again was not only easy but also the right thing to do.

It was a gift that almighty has bestowed upon me, I always wanted to use it for good cause so it won’t be wasted, and using my writing as the main source of income for my charity happened to be one of the best decisions I have ever made.

I made that decision in 2009, started writing again and by 2015 when I was just over fifty and finally ready to publish all of my 6 books all at once. I have two more books coming soon and have plan to continue writing at least 2 more books every year hereon.

6. Helping Others

humanitarian aid 939723

Since I don’t write for money or fame, I decided to be a writer of conscience, and I always write for people, society and whenever possible for mankind as well. My books are based on serious global and social issues, the subject matters of my books are always the real one, and they are presented with a fictional story around the real issue.

My books are meant to be good for students, families, and to the general publics who care about global and social issues in our world. My books contain no vulgarity, sex, violence or any other bad elements which are so prevalent and widespread in modern writing and my books can be shared by the whole family at any given time.

Although I have spent my whole adult life in Hong Kong, I always wanted to do something for my people back in Nepal, and the noble wish of giving back something back to the society drives me for always working hard.

Nepal is still a very poor country in the world, a small amount can do a big difference there in peoples’ life and there are so many of such poor people who genuinely need help. I am just trying to do my part here and nothing more, if we don’t help nobody will.

That was the reason behind my decision of dedicating all of my time and efforts in the service of the needy children in Nepal and that is precisely what I am trying now. God willing, hope I can fulfill my goal.

7. Working for Charity

All the proceeds generated from my books are use to run my charity called ISSLCARE which is registered in Hong Kong and it helps finance poor families in Nepal so they can send their children school.

We have already started a campaign back in Nepal, we are now sponsoring 25 children (12x boys + 13x girls) through 8 schools, and as we grow with time, we have a plan to expand the campaign throughout the nation so we can help as many children as possible in the future.

It can take 5 years, 10 years or even my lifetime; I am fully committed to my goal and will persevere until to the end. I need to sell at least 10 books through Amazon to be able to sponsor one child, my endeavors will go on until I fulfill my goal and it is the only reason why I come to work each day.

8. Happiness

Secrets of Happiness

Writing is the wellspring of my happiness, provides solace to my soul and warms up my heart. Helping children is the reason of my living; it saves me from the unnecessary burden of having to live with this cruel world and prevents me from insanity.

If writing is my blood, helping children is my air, and without one, my existence is uncertain. Humans are selfish creatures by nature, we don’t budge without our own motives, and I am no exception.

Besides my family, writing is the most important part of my life and without it I am nothing, and whatever I am doing is for the sake of my own happiness and nothing more. And it is my writing that is making it all possible.

12 Habits for Better Work

There is working hard and then there is working smart.  When you work smart, you maximize your potential to be as efficient as possible while streamlining and boosting your overall success.

Working hard is a cornerstone to being successful in whatever you do, but when you add working smart to the process, it catapults you to new heights.  Here are twelve tips to help you work smart:

1. Plan your work around your Natural Biorhythms

Things Successful People Do Before 8 AM

If you are a natural morning person, plan your most important tasks earlier in the day.  If you come alive late at night, work with your natural biorhythms to boost your productivity.

There’s an old saying, “If you can’t beat them, join them.”  If you know you lose to the midday slugs every day, give in and plan a powernap for twenty minutes about that time. You can always add twenty minutes to your schedule earlier or later in the day when you are most productive and will reap the reward for it later.

2. Set daily Mini Goals and allocate specific timeframes within your day to Accomplish them

Set Smart Goals in Life

When people fail to plan, they plan to fail.  Complete each mini goal before you move on to the next goal.  At the end of the day, look back at all the mini tasks you accomplished during the day.  It’s a great motivator to help you start planning your mini goals for the next day.

3. Take care of yourself first

Start Practicing Self-Love

It goes without saying that when you are not at your best, you won’t do your best work.  Get a good night’s sleep, take a multi-vitamin, eat well and exercise.  As simple as these things are, they are the first things to go when pressures begin to mount.

And when the pressure rises, that’s when you need the extra edge that comes from taking care of yourself.

4. Take frequent short Breaks

Get and Stay Motivated

Walk away from what you are doing to get a fresh perspective.  A brief change of scenery or mental rest can stimulate your motivation and creativity resulting in a higher quality of work and an overall happier work experience.  All work and no play makes a dull person and subpar work!

5. Be Organized

Chaos only begets more chaos.  Limit multi-tasking as much as possible.  It may seem like you are being productive at the time,  but handling too many tasks at the same time leaves too many opportunities to make mistakes.

If you want to really soar in your endeavors, be as organized as possible in every area of your project.  A well organized plan becomes a well executed plan.

6. Foster a Social Network

social media 961769

No one is an island and we all need support from time to time.  By taking time to feed the important relationships in your life, you’ll have the support you need to really shine in whatever you do.

7. Listen to your Inner thoughts

Gain Your Emotional Intelligence

If your inner voice is saying “This isn’t right,” or “It’s time to stop,” listen to that voice. Going with your gut can give your work a special focus that sets you apart from the rest.

8. Self-Improvement

Self Improvement

Whenever you do something to improve  yourself in one area of your life, the benefits always spill over into other areas of your life as well.  If you want to be better in one area of your life, improve another. The different areas of our lives are connected in many ways. Developing one area of your life can give you better work habits in another,

9. Have the Right Attitude no matter what the Task or Situation

Positive Attitude In Life

Be a glass half-full kind of person.  Refuse to believe the glass is half empty.  The right attitude can go a long way towards making your work unique and special.

10. Think outside of the box Build a better widget

Just because it has been done one way in the past doesn’t mean that is the best way to do something.  Give yourself permission to expand the boundaries and your work will take new directions.

11. Prioritize

board 752051

Certain things must come first in order to be efficient and effective.  If you tried to drive to work and then get dressed, it might not work out so well for you.  Really spend some time contemplating which items needs to come first and why.

Once you have a better understanding of the appropriate order things should happen, you’ll be on your way to achieving a more satisfying work experience.

12. Be Flexible

athlete 671219

Life happens and things don’t always work out as planned.  Being rigid only adds to the stress when these types of situations occur.  A flexible approach will help you navigate back to a place where you can pick up where you left off and resume your progress.

Like most things in life, developing healthy habits leads to success. Whatever you do, make sure you are practicing the right work habits to give you the greatest chance for success.  The results will speak for themselves.

Successfully Stick to your Exercise Program

Successfully Stick to your Exercise Program

bodybuilder 925770

Becoming successful at anything is a stressful journey filled with failures and setbacks. Fitness is no different. But that doesn’t need to happen. Follow these steps and you’ll be able to make exercise, maybe the best stress reliever, work for you.

Decide on an activity that you Enjoy or which will Motivate you

Stay Motivated

If you don’t like the mode of exercise you choose, you’re probably never going to even get started. Don’t worry about it not being hard enough, or long enough. Something is always better than nothing. Choose activities you’ll enjoy and complete.

As you progress and fitness becomes part of your lifestyle you’ll be surprised what activities you’ll be willing to try and even the ones you thought you could do, are now possible.

Focus on the investment, not the cost

office 620822

Too often we focus on the “cost” of something, that is, working out will take up so much of my time. I can do something else…

Instead of focusing on the cost of working out, focus on the investment in yourself that you’ll be making. Think about all of the aspects of your life that will improve with regular exercise. Regular exercise results in improved sleep, more energy, weight loss, increased muscle mass, stress management and heightened self esteem.

Set very achievable, short-term Goals

Set Smart Goals in Life

Having realistic, short term, goals are one of the absolute keys to success with exercise. Achievable, short term goals, allow you to constantly “move the goalposts”, as you’re rewarded for your consistency and effort with constant, measurable, improvement.

Make it an Appointment

time 750324

Plan out days and times and put them on a calendar. Treat exercise like any other appointment.

This gives you accountability and allows for control of your schedule. Just like any other appointment, sometimes you’re going to need to reschedule or miss it all together. But it’s no big deal because you’ll be able to see if and where you can reschedule your exercise into your day.

Have a Backup plan

plan 763855

As long as you’ve planned for the unplanned you’ll be able to achieve a little of you had planned. You could take a walk/ run at lunch, run up and down the stairs in your building, do a bodyweight circuit in a park nearby, etc.

Keep in mind half of having a backup plan means making sure you have the equipment. It doesn’t take much more than a small duffel bag with a change of gym clothes a towel and some. While your original plan for the day may have to be cancelled, you’re still able to get some good exercise.

Accept the less than Perfect

thumb 422147

Too often on the road to success we get caught up in perfection and become paralyzed by our own parameters of perfection. We waste time searching for that ‘perfect something…it is important to act; adjustments can always be made later.

Instead of getting caught up in the complications of perfection, focus on simply doing. If you have limited time, utilize it effectively. It is better than doing nothing.

“One is always greater than zero” Gary Vaynerchuck

Track it:

Maintain a log. It allows you to measure your progress. Once you start to see the numbers creep up and the results become obvious, you will motivated to more hours of effective exercise.

Make it a Habit

cycling 655565

Many people believe that it takes 21 days to create a habit. Unfortunately, that’s probably too short. It takes longer. It may a take a couple of months. You have to be patient and not give up. Not only does this time-frame help exercise become a part of your identity, but it’s also long enough that you to be able to see and experience the changes in your body.

Bonus Tip: Try to Workout First Thing in the Morning

There is quite a bit of debate on the optimal time of day to workout. The best time to work-out is whenever you can. But, working out first thing in the morning does give you the advantage of getting it done and out of the way before the mundane routine of the day begins

3 Ways to Stop the Endless Cycle of ##Dieting

3 Ways to Stop the Endless Cycle of Dieting

orange juice 569064

How many times have you lost the same 5, 10, 20 lbs or more, only to regain it back?  And the irony is, if you are like so many people who are on the weight loss roller-coaster, you probably know exactly what foods you should and shouldn’t be eating.

So, the question is: Why aren’t you motivated to eat the way you need to eat to produce the results you say you want?  If you’re honest with yourself, you will see that the answer is, because you think it will be too hard. I’m here to give you some great news—it doesn’t have to be!

Here are three steps I discovered to lose weight healthfully and keep it off, that have worked for thousands.

1. Make your decision

to do list 749304

That’s right. Decide once and for all that you’re no longer going to continue to allow your life force energy to be consumed with this ridiculous time sucker.  Think about why living your life unhealthy and overweight, obsessed with diets, the scale and your reflection in the mirror, is no longer an option for you.

Make a list of the reasons why you are ready to finally start honoring and caring for yourself and doing what it takes to live your life healthy and at your ideal weight, permanently.

2. Stop the Excuses and start changing your Behaviors

feet 932346

Overcome Laziness

Yes, on the one hand you already know how to lose weight—so much so that you could probably write a book about it—but on the other hand since what you are doing isn’t working, it’s time to try something else.

In your gut, you know that the truth is that there is no gimmick that will make you skinny, in the long run. It’s not realistic to think that you’ll work out for two hours a day, or stop eating carbs completely.  For most people, counting calories and points or taking massive amounts of supplements doesn’t work in the long run either.

What does work is following these simple tips:

  • Plan ahead
  • Eat whole, real, clean unprocessed food from the earth
  • Keep your blood sugar steady by eating a balanced combination of healthy protein, delicious salads and vegetables, raw, steamed, grilled or sautéed, healthy fats like avocado and extra virgin olive oil, a small amount of nuts and seeds and some complex carbohydrates like oat meal, sweet potato and winter squash.
  • Avoid sugar in any form, including sugar substitutes and processed foods, filled with chemicals.
  • Eat only when you are physically hungry
  • Move your body!

3. Change Your Thinking

frustration 2

Face With Change in Your Life

It’s time to stop letting your small, reactive self run the show in this area of your life. Just because you think of a certain food, doesn’t mean you have to eat it!

In areas of your life where you are successful—such as in your relationships, career, parenting—do you blurt out every idea that comes into your mind, or act on every impulse?  Of course not, so why do so in this area of your life?

Let your higher mind guide you to your inner self where your greatest wisdom can lead you to success.  Let your body tell you and show you what it needs. Before you eat anything, ask yourself: How will this food make me feel?  Do I even really want it?  How will I feel after I eat it?

Use visualization and self-hypnosis to remind yourself of what you really want. Your mind thinks in pictures so see yourself healthy, happy and at your ideal weight.  Imagine yourself loving your reflection in the mirror, embracing your beauty, feeling romantic, happy, fully alive in your body!

The past doesn’t equal the future.  Stop letting an old negative self concept control your future. Choose a new destiny.  And most importantly stop struggling. You don’t need to white knuckle it.

It truly can be easy—the key is staying focused and getting into the right mindset. Cravings are just as much in the mind as they are in the body.

Alkalize your body with celery, lemons and organic apple cider vinegar to help eliminate any physical cravings for sweet, oily or salty food. At the same time, tap into the power of your mind to break free from those emotional attachments to food that just don’t serve you anymore.

Hold onto a new image of yourself healthy, happy and free.  Relax and claim your greater good—your highest destiny to live your life well and at your ideal weight!  You can do it!

3 Simple Steps to Being Happy Every Single Day

fashion person woman girl

Do you ever wake up and think, “I hope I feel sad today?
Of course not. We all want to have amazing, happy-go-lucky days.
But as the Rembrandts taught us in the Friends theme song, sometimes you feel like “it hasn’t been your day, your week, your month, or even your year…”

Whether you have someone “there for you” or not, there is always a way to maximize your happiness, even on those not-so-good times. It takes a little time and a lot of self-reflection to really hone in on your true happiness, but I think being happy is what life is all about.

So why not put the time in to achieve it?

Why not try to maximize it?

It’s silly not to. Downright stupid, actually.

So I challenge you to follow these three basic steps. Don’t just skim them over and “kinda sorta” consider them maybe… for later… possibly. Really think about each one and how it would change your quality of life to be truly happy.

1. Surround Yourself With Positive People

positive people

Positive Thinking

What I’ve found is that most days I don’t even realize I’m not feeling happy until I see someone who is. This person is usually not just a little happy… they are genuinely, ridiculously, uncontrollably, obsessed-with-life happy. Try to find these people in your life and just be around them.

If you were stuck outside at a concert when a torrential downpour began, which person would be the one spinning in circles with their face to the sky still singing the lyrics to the songs? THAT is the person you need to hang around more.

That friend who ran to the nearest bathroom screaming and stomping? Spend less time with them. Learn to love positive people and to surround yourself with positive people and you’ll find yourself becoming much, much happier. (Positive Attitude In Life)

2. Identify, Seek, And Destroy The Negative

Overcome Negative Thinking

For one reason or another, we are all attracted to the negative side of a situation. For a lot of people, “seeing the bright side” is easier said than done.

Even though it may sound counterproductive, identifying the negative can help you discover the positive. The key is to have that “aha” moment when you catch yourself being “Negative Nancy.” Identify that you’re being a downer for no reason, and push that negativity away. For instance, if I’m at the store and there’s a long line and only one register is open…more often than not I’m irritated.

So I’ll try to:

1. Stop and realize I’m just being negative (Identify)

2. Think about how small this problem is (Seek)

3. Do something positive (Destroy)

Sometimes you need to pause and realize that other people are having worse moments right now than you having to stand in line at register four. Perhaps I could take out my phone and check my email. Maybe even call my mom, because I’ve been putting it off for three days. Bottom line is: by doing something productive with the time spent, I’m creating a positive.

3. Do Good For Others

To truly maximize your happiness, you have to bring happiness to others. This is probably the most important step.

Have you ever had a really good day?

Stop and think to yourself, What was it that made it so special? It’s likely that something happened that day to make you smile. Maybe a co-worker brought you a donut.

Or a stranger held the door open for you even though you were slightly farther away and you had to run a little because you felt bad. Or maybe you just simply received an unexpected compliment.

These little things matterKindness matters.

Bringing happiness to someone else’s day also brings happiness to your day. That person who held the door for you? I’m sure they felt pretty darn good about it. When that co-worker picked up that box of donuts for the office, they were probably really pleased when they dropped them off.

Putting a smile on another person’s face creates a smile on your own. This generates a whole beautiful mess of happiness.

So at the end of the day, just try to always remember there is good out there. There are genuinely happy people. (Laughter Therapy)

So let’s all become them. Let’s inspire others to do the same. Let’s be really, ridiculously, uncontrollably, obsessed-with-life happy.

importance of Strategic Management & Strategic Planning

  1. Strategic management can be defined as the art and science of formulating, implementing and evaluating cross-functional decisions that enable an organization to achieve its objectives.”[1]
  2. “An integrative management field that combines analysis, formulation, and implementation in the quest for competitive advantage.”[2]
  3. Strategic management includes understanding the strategic position of an organisation, making strategic choices for the future and managing strategy in action.”[3]
  4. Strategic management is defined as the process by which managers of the firm analyze the internal and external environments for the purpose of formulating strategies and allocating resources to develop a competitive advantage in an industry that allows for the successful achievement of organizational goals.”[4]

What is that strategic management?

Various definitions are used to describe the subject, but few give a full and easy to understand answer. The combination of all 4 definitions used previously gives us a much clearer view of what the subject is:

Strategic management is a continuous process of strategic analysis, strategy creation, implementation and monitoring, used by organizations with the purpose to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage.

The general purpose of doing it is to combine the energy of organization’s functional areas into one focused effort to achieve superior performance. It is usually done through the many steps of the process.

In essence, it answers the following 3 questions:

  • Where the organization is at the moment?
  • Where does it want to go?
  • How it will get there?

Strategic management is not about predicting the future, but about preparing for it and knowing what exact steps the company will have to take to implement its strategic plan and achieve a competitive advantage.[5]

The difference between strategic management and strategic planning

Both strategic management and strategic planning terms mean the same! The difference is that the latter one is more used in the business world while the former is used in the academic environment.

According to David,[1] strategic planning is sometimes confused with strategy formulation, because strategic plan is constructed in this stage.

Importance of strategic planning

Requirement for sustained competitive advantage. Competitive advantage is what keeps great organizations ahead of their competitors. Rothaermel[2] pointed out that the company, which has a competitive advantage, performs financially much better than other companies in the industry or better than the industry average. Some companies may achieve it without thorough strategic plan but for the most players out there it is vital to plan strategically, i.e. analyze, create, implement and monitor, and do this continuously. It is not guaranteed that companies will ever achieve competitive advantage conducting strategic planning but it is an essential process if the company wants sustain it.

Views things from broader perspective. The other reason why the organizations don’t simply rely on their finances, marketing or operations functional areas to create competitive advantage is that managers of each area often view things only from their own specific angle[3], which is too narrow view for the whole organization to rely upon. Only the managers (e.g. CEOs or strategic planners) who see the whole picture of the company and its surrounding environments can make the decisions that bring the competitive advantage.

Facilitates collaboration. Nowadays, most companies involve middle managers of functional areas into the process of formulating strategic plan. Middle managers are the people who implement the strategies set out in a plan and if they aren’t involved in making the plan, then they aren’t so committed to support it.

Thus, strategic planning is used to achieve the competitive advantage and to integrate all the functional areas of the company by facilitating the communication between the managers of all levels.

  1. Defines a company’s vision, mission and future goals.
  2. Identifies the suitable strategies to achieve the goals.
  3. Improves awareness of the external and internal environments, and clearly identifies the competitive advantage.
  4. Increases managers’ commitment to achieving the company’s objectives.
  5. Improves coordination of the activities and more efficient allocation of company’s resources.
  6. Better communication between managers of the different levels and functional areas.
  7. Reduces resistance to change by informing the employees of the changes and the consequences of them.
  8. Strengthens the firm’s performance.
  9. On average, companies using strategic management are more successful than the companies that don’t.
  10. Strategic planning allows the organization to become more proactive than reactive.

Although strategic management brings many benefits to the company it also has its limitations:

  1. The costs of engaging in it are huge.
  2. The process is complex.
  3. Success is not guaranteed.
